Carving wood by hand is a slow and repetitive process but at LUCUS Craft I get into a rhythm chipping away and love it. I work out of a fixed up old barn in the backyard on a little island in the east coast of Canada. I’m a self taught woodcarver and I’m interested in the patterns time creates. Born in the north of England, I grew up in an ultra-urban environment. We lived in a flat right under the Tyne Bridge (visualize the label on Newcastle Brown Ale). The rusting leftovers of the industrial revolution and fragments of the Roman Wall were my fabulous playgrounds. Front Paper is a Canadian stationery company based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The illustrator and designer behind Front Paper is Elizabeth Roth, a graphic designer and political scientist turned illustrator and letterer. Her work stems from a deep love of stationery and the printed good, typography, children’s books and vintage advertisements. Keeping her company while she works are endless podcasts, audiobooks and the occasional Netflix binge. All of the illustrations and type are hand drawn and painted (with gouache) before they are scanned and prepared digitally for printing. The cards are then printed on an offset press in Saskatoon. Guitars: My COMMITMENT is to build individual instruments to the highest possible standards using the best materials available and never take any shortcuts. To me, building individual instruments means taking the extra time to make the most of each instrument, bringing out its own voice. Building this way takes a tremendous amount of time but the results are worth it. Paintings: These paintings have all been done with water based mediums, both acrylic and watercolor. Most have since been sold to various clients scattered across North America and Europe. These paintings are representative of paintings that were done since the 1970’s that look at man’s relationship with our environment and though man himself is usually absent from the canvas, his presence is felt in the man made objects in most of the paintings. There is a sunny cabin, nestled in the woods near the shore of Shallow Bay. This is the ideal home and studio for Yukon artist Lara Melnik. Primarily self taught, Lara has been making unique jewelry for many years. Her obsession with beads has driven her to create her own, using polymer clay and the ancient Italian technique of millefiori canework. She has a strong attraction to striking colours and this is evident in her recent exploration of the medium. Lara has been creating small landscapes and abstracts by blending and layering the clay. Texture, colour and relief play an important role in these scenes and three-dimensional wall sculptures. Tiny gardens and forests of whimsical mushrooms seem to “grow” right out of the wall. I’ve made prints in one form or another for over twenty years, but for the past decade I’ve focused exclusively on traditional woodcut prints. There are no chemicals and no heavy machinery involved, just a selection of hand tools and time. I use hardwoods because they retain detail and print well, and all of the papers I use are hand-made (though not by me). I don’t use a press, but hand rub each image using either a wooden spoon or a Japanese baren (a disc with a coil of rope on the underside that creates both pressure and friction). The history of woodcut prints is important to me. It is the first way prints were made; the oldest surviving woodcuts on paper are Buddhist sutras with beautiful illustrations that date to 7th century China. From there, woodcut printmaking spread across the world along with paper-making, becoming the main form of printing for a thousand years. Movable type and letterpress use the same basic principle, and larger display typefaces were still made with wood into the 1800s. Part of the art made in Canada directory. Products:

I opened my Eye Poetry Photography Etsy shop in 2007 at a time when photography had become an all-consuming passion. I had been a dabbler for a good decade before then, but by 2005 it was a full-blown obsession, and by 2008, my full-time career. My photography has been featured by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, The Nate Berkus Show, Apartment Therapy, Daily Candy, Decor8, and Domino Magazine. My work has been exhibited at the San Diego Natural History Museum, The Sundance Film Festival, Galerie Sakura in Paris, and is in the ArtStar curated online art gallery.
