| In 1976 I was offered the job of managing the farm and NB roadside markets for the family business, Stirling Fruit Farms LTD. As a young graduate from Nova Scotia Agricultural College, the challenge was too great to resist. I moved to Gagetown and started planting new varieties of apples and opening new roadside markets to supply New Brunswickers with farm fresh apples from our farms in NB and NS. By the mid 1990’s, things changed with the family farm. My Grandfather passed away and the third generation of the family was involved in the business. For the good of all, it was decided to split into smaller business units. Through the split, Applemanfarms, Ltd. purchased the farm in Gagetown but it came without access to the roadside markets in NB. Therefore for the first time since the NB Stirling apple stands were built, New Brunswick grown apples would not be available. In 2004 fifty years had gone by since Hurricane Edna sent A. R. | Boates Farm specializes in organic apples, pears, sweet apple cider and vinegars. We strive to produce apples and pears with as few inputs as possible. This helps boost populations of beneficial insects and lends to an ecologically-friendly management system. All of our new orchard plantings are managed organically without synthetic inputs. Our organic program is certified by Pro-Cert Organic Systems Inc. Fresh fruit, sweet cider and vinegar are marketed at a U-Pick during harvest in the Fall, located at Boates Farm as well as throughout the winter. Picked fruit, sweet cider and vinegar are available on Saturdays at the historic Farmer’s Market at the Brewery, 1496 Water Street, Halifax. Also, for the past 48 years, we have hosted the major fundraiser for the community of Woodville – a chicken BBQ on the Sunday of Apple Blossom weekend now serving over 3800 meals. | At Gagetown Distilling & Cidery we started off growing apples as this is what the family has done for the past 7 generations as Gagetown Fruit Farm. As times change apple sales were found to be lagging slightly with the changes in purchasing systems of stores, which left an abundance in supply but not enough direct sale demand. In 2011 we moved into the cider business which has become very successful for us, but still we have the same problem, we still have excess apples that needed processing. | The County Cider Company is a top destination in Prince Edward County, with over 50 000 visitors each year. We’re technically considered an estate winery, but we’ve been specializing in authentic hard ciders since 1995. Award-winning ciders carefully crafted from the very best apples grown on our family farm and nearby orchards. Made with love and 100% pure apple juice. The family farm over-looking the shores of Prince Edward Bay, in the heart of Prince Edward County, has been producing apples since 1850. It was bought by William and Berva Howes back in 1970. Their son Grant, took over the orchards in the early 90’s with the dream of making cider. One year later Grant had produced a cider good enough to impress the LCBO. Two years later Grant’s Cider was on store shelves across Ontario. The man who in time would become known as The Grandfather of Ontario Cider was on his way. Today, we grow over 16 varieties of apples on our two orchards. All told that’s over 40 acres of apple trees producing roughly 1,600 tonnes of apples, which in turn produces about 350,000 litres of the good stuff, each year.
