Fireweed Community Market – Inspired by the farmer’s markets they visited while travelling through Alberta, Whitehorse residents Simone Rudge and Wendy Bushell started organizing weekly markets at Takhini Gas on Mayo Road in 2000. By 2005, the market was officially established as a non-for-profit and moved downtown – first to the parking lot at Shipyards Park and then to the park.
Throughout the years, the market has served as an incubator, allowing several local producers to test their wares and build a customer base before jumping to a brick and mortar location. The market has not only become a marketplace but also an integral part of the social, economic and cultural fabric of Whitehorse, promoting sustainability, community spirit and local entrepreneurship.
