I started Kama Pigments in 1996 in my apartment (a semi-basement) with very modest means but an ambitious mission: to make available the raw materials (notably dry pigments) as well as the knowledge necessary for artists to make their own colors and mediums.

Aside from the cost of materials, we believe that making your own paint and mediums is an art in itself and the best way to acquire the knowledge that leads to mastery of your chosen technique. Just as artists before him did, by making his colors, the contemporary artist develops a deep understanding of what materials can accomplish, of what they can become: he knows intimately what he is working with, how his paint will behave during the creation of his work as well as afterward, when it is finished.

In my opinion, knowing the properties of the materials we use is essential because it allows us not to be restricted to the only products offered by the industry. This knowledge removes the limits to one’s creativity since it opens the door to all pictorial techniques.
