Our Pierogi House Company Limited story begins in 1943, with Irena Kotas, who we lovingly call Babcia (Grandma in Polish). Babcia was raised in the mountainous region of southeast Poland where pierogi was a staple food that graced the tables of families throughout the region, often accompanied by the fruits and vegetables that were grown right in the backyard. As Babcia tells it, if you were lucky, your backyard even had a chicken or a cow.
In 1990, Babcia’s daughter Lila, and her husband Jacek, emigrated to Ontario, Canada where they started a family. 10 years later, Babcia joined the family in Canada to help raise her two grandchildren. This is how the authentic pierogi made its way from Poland to our table in Kitchener, Ontario and now to yours! You see, when Babcia had spare time, she would make pierogi using the recipe she learned from her Babcia. And, she would make a lot of pierogi… feeding her friends and family. Once someone tasted a Babcia-made pierogi, they were asking for more and more!
