| According to Lone Pine Canoe Company – “Paddle a thing of beauty.” That’s the motto of Paul Burns, the owner in Bracebridge, Ontario, and it applies to what you paddle as much as to where you paddle. He takes a personal interest in each project that enters his shop and he loves delving into the history and ‘the story’ behind the watercraft that he’s working on. His love for canoe-building started at the age of 14 when he built his first wood-frame / canvas Kayak as part of a club in high school. Inspired by his teachers, who had built their own cedar strip canoes, he had finished building his own Redbird by the time he graduated from high school in 1987. | First formed in the crucible of the boutique long-board brand Ashes, the idea for this venture has been sitting ready for birthing, unformed and unknown for years. In the Spring of 2014, two of the four kids were out of the house … evenings and weekends felt more free than they had since my days as a young writer and I set out to test the idea that physical objects could tell a story every bit as compelling as words on a page or images on screen. | WEST COUNTRY CANOES was begun by Larry Bowers on no more than his passion for cedar canvas canoes. Since 1991 with much perseverance and hard work along with the support and assistance of his family , has enabled the business to grow and prosper. Larry’s canoes are constructed of the finest yellow cedar, which is native to the West Coast. The ribs are steamed and bent over a form and planking is attached to these ribs with brass tacks. The wooden shell is removed from the form, trimmed, decks installed, sanded and readied for canvas. The canvas skin is stretched extremely tight and then the weave is filled with either a traditional or industrial filler. Finally the canoe is finished with 5 coats of spar varnish and 5 coats of marine enamel. We love to build canoes and that is reflected in our finished product. | Lots of stuff goes on in this Red River Canoe shop, located in Lorette, Manitoba. Primarily it’s the building and repair of classic wood & canvas canoes, and the making of premium canoe paddles. I also do custom boat building, composite fabrication, and special projects. A growing passion of mine is the making of classical guitars, I’ll post about that, too. I want to be able to share with my clients the progress of their commissioned work. Later I started thinking that there might be other people who are interested in what goes on inside a wooden canoe shop operated by an artist and a recovering teacher. | At Badger Paddles we believe in a mix of a little modern with a lot of tradition and strive to use the old fashioned methods wherever possible. Our canoe paddles are machine cut from a single piece of wood, after which each product is individually shaped by hand using an array of belt and drum sanders (with the exception of our laminated Cubs). It is then given a final hand sanding before final finishing. Once finished, each Badger canoe paddle is a unique wood carving, and work of art, as no two products are the same. | Natural Birch Bark Canoes Tom Byers is a Metis birchbark canoe builder who grew up along the St. Lawrence seaway in Canada, the historic heartland of the fur trade era. He has always lived near water. Since 1994 he has honed the craft of birchbark canoe making on the banks of the Vermilion River in northern Ontario near the northwestern boundary of Killarney Wilderness Park. He builds canoes using the “old ways” based on traditional methods with quality birch bark, spruce root lashings, cedar sheathing and gunwales, hardwood thwarts and spruce gum/bear fat mixture as a waterproof sealant. All completed without the use of power tools. He transforms natural materials from the forest into “living” works of art.
