| Drummond Pens and gift products are “collector’s” quality, custom made from a careful selection of native and exotic woods. Each item is hand-turned on a wood lathe using hand tools, skill and time. Absolutely no automatic cutters or duplicators are used. If you have a piece of wood that has some special meaning for you, send it to Garth to see if he can make a pen for you from it. Garth begins with a branch or piece of wood. This is cut to about 5 in. by 3/4 in. and then cut in two. These pieces are then drilled to accept brass tubes.After the tubes are glued into place, they are allowed to dry and subsequently placed on the turning lathe. After turning the pens, a special wax is applied. The first wax has a little bit of abrasiveness to it and the final wax gives the pen a very hard finish and shine. | I was never formally trained in woodworking. Aside from a few one-day seminars, all that I’ve come to know has been through trial and “terror” method. It is my belief that the knowledge I have gained from experimentation has made me better at what I do. After all, you can’t improve or grow if you can’t push a few boundaries. At first, I focused on custom made furniture. I have created bathroom vanities, chest of drawers, and blanket boxes. However, as time progressed I shifted my focus to more personal items that can be used daily. That’s when I discovered the writing instruments: wooden bodied pencils; rollerball, fountain, and ballpoint pens. Over the years they have become my best-selling item so far. In addition to that, I have also made home décor items: various wooden bodied lamps, or tree burls that have been made into wall decoration; and kid/teenager friendly items like games and longboards. | I have been working with the CMHA BC Division since November of 2017. When I was asked if I would be willing to film my story, my answer was YES. I never thought I could be susceptible to depression and anxiety, after all it is all in your head, a “made up” condition. It is my wish that my story can help others with their own mental health issues and that they might also see that the light at the end of the tunnel is not a freight train but is in fact a new beginning.
