| I own and operate Hazy Pottery on the Sunshine Coast, where I live with my husband and pack of beagles. Our company is actually named after our first pup, Hazy! We specialize in handmade ceramic stoneware, along with mold design and production. I’m a chef by trade but have been surrounded by clay and the processes from a young age. I love being able to present my home cooked meals on pieces that I have created by hand in my studio. At Hazy Pottery, we can do more than our in-house work. | Both Pam and I were fortunate to have graduated from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Pam has a BA in Ceramics and a BEd in Art Education, while I received a BA in Ceramics from Ohio Northern University and an MFA in Ceramics from NSCAD). While at NSCAD, in addition to gaining the obvious technical knowledge required to become potters, we gained perspective, seeing and studying pottery across cultures, from Neolithic times to the present. We have been shaped by early English slipware and the tradition of the commemorative plate, and by the strong forms and pattern of Eastern ceramics. “How To Wrap 5 Eggs: Traditional Japanese Packaging” was a major influence in my appreciation of form and function. The Arts and Crafts movement, and its idea that function does not preclude beauty, has also deeply informed our work. In this age of “instant everything”, we see more and more people connecting with hand-made, well-crafted, considered pieces that embody the integrity of their maker. For over four decades, we have strived to make pieces that you never tire of—ones that can be a functional and beautiful part of your daily routine for years to come. | In both my Black Crow Pottery and one-of-a-kind pieces, I primarily use Nova Scotia earthenware. It’s not only a strong and beautiful clay, it connects me to this land which is my home. Using a foundation of inspiration from historical ceramics, I use a variety of techniques to make work; hand building, slip casting, and throwing on the wheel. My favorite of these is throwing. | I’m Jackie Frioud and I’ve been a maker all my life. After art school and then having children, I fell in love with clay and functional pottery. In 2000, I was captivated by salt-glazing. I love the earthy colours, the varied, tactile, orange-peel surface and the way the salt glaze shows the evidence of making. I make my work in Vancouver and fire in my salt kiln at the Tidal Art Centre in Lund, B.C. which is two ferries away, but close to our remote cabin in Desolation Sound. Kayaking along that coastline and cross-country skiing on the North Shore mountains immerse me in the sublime beauty of nature. I have a BFA from the University of B.C. and I studied for several years with the potter Sam Kwan at Capilano College. After two decades, I still feel a thrill in transforming soft clay into finished pots. Creating pottery is a very real connection to nature and to art. | Esther of Esther Drone Pottery is a potter and ceramic artist based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. She specializes in functional pottery and carved porcelain pieces.She grew up in Windsor Ontario where she started taking pottery, painting and drawing lessons at the Willistead Manor Coach-house in the early 70’s. With money she earned selling functional pottery she bought her first wheel and kiln. She moved to the Toronto area to attend Sheridan College School Craft & Design graduating with a Ceramic’s Major in 1980. Teaching many children and adult clay classes over the years has inspired her to make ornamental clay animals and learn new project ideas such as clay whistles. Her functional work is designed to be durable and chip resistant and dishwasher safe. Esther’s work is in constant development as she expands her business. Born in Nova Scotia, she has always been fascinated with hand-thrown ceramic product, but her love for mud and clay grew after moving to Prince Edward Island several years ago. A passionate island potter, who is perpetually learning about the art and craft of throwing, firing and glazing.
