| Harkening back to the dark ages of 2008 – before the Zero-waste movement was really a thing – “The Sling Sisters” Sandra O’Malley and Lori Hawkins (who are actually sisters) started sewing baby slings that were prized by their community. They had babies, their friends had babies, so it made sense. Their guiding principle was simply to produce a sling that was safe, convenient for young families and that didn’t fall apart after a year of use. | I created Bow Valley Straws during the Summer of 2018 in Canmore, Alberta as an artistic alternative to plastic as well as other reusable straws. There was a huge movement starting around Canada to encourage restaurants to cut back on single use plastics, starting with mainly plastic straws. Other unpleasant alternatives such as paper were being offered or nothing at all. I found many drinks still need a proper straw (smoothies, iced drinks) and as well there are also many people out there with disabilities that require a straw for drinks and even soups. Bow Valley Straws are locally handcrafted in Alberta from durable Borosilicate Glass which is also kiln-annealed, making it extra strong, dishwasher safe and great for both hot and cold drinks. They are easy to keep clean with a cleaning brush and the best part is you can actually see if they are clean all the way through. I also travel around Alberta to various markets & events doing live glassblowing demos and educating the public about plastic alternatives as well as the art of borosilicate glass work.
