| In 1999 we emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada together with our three children. We began farming north of Picture Butte, Alberta in 2001, and in a couple years were able to begin growing grass seed. As time went on, we started to think about different ideas and approaches for our family farm which would allow us to bring a diverse aspect to growing our crops. During these years we were blessed with five more children, who are all very involved in the family farm. Our farm consists of both cattle and various crops. At Van Garderen Ranch we feed baby Holstein calves for a custom feedlot and graze yearlings on our own grass fields. Growing up in the Netherlands, we were familiar with windmills. Although for a while they lost their purpose due to an increase in technology, they have regained popularity with the health-conscious and environmental-enthusiasts alike. | Our humble beginnings can be traced back to a bitterly cold day in January, 1982. Stu Fleischhaker and George Berthault left Grand Falls, NB with a half-ton truck of milling wheat bound for Speerville. Despite an impending snow storm and several vehicle issues, the mill’s first load of flour was ground and delivered to Fredericton in 72 hours. Two years later, after struggling to market our product as a fledgling flour mill, we signed on with Dolphin-Village Distributors in Moncton. Years later, they’re still a major distributor of Speerville Flour Mill products across Atlantic Canada. Since then, through many triumphs, pitfalls and even a change in ownership, our guiding principles have remained the same. We’re committed to creating and promoting local food that is nutritious, sustainable and helps build strong rural communities. | InfraReady Products was started in 1994 by the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (SWP) in an attempt to add value to cereal grains before they left the province. With only the equipment, no products and no clients, Mark Pickard, the SWP’s project champion and 2 employees, started to carve out a unique niche in the food ingredients market, aiming to be the secret ingredient in many different food applications. In 1998, the company had grown to 13 employees, 100 products, and exported ingredients around the world. Accounting for a minute portion of the balance book, the SWP decided to divest itself of InfraReady, and offered Mark the opportunity to carry out a management buyout to ensure the company’s work would continue. | North Country Grains and the Hofford’s family farm is located just outside the small rural town of Bowsman, Manitoba. The farm is a mixed farming operation that includes growing certified organic grains, raising pastured pork, and grass fed beef. The main crops in rotation are Organic Barley, Organic Wheat, and Organic Oats. Pastured Pork and Grass Fed Beef are only available at select times of the year.
