| At Cribbage Boards by Lorne Mertick I made my first cribbage board for my grandfather when I was seventeen. It was a high school shop project, a pine table with mahogany trim. I can fondly remember my relatives playing spirited games on this piece. I was born in Regina, Saskatchewan; perhaps the cold prairie winters helped me develop a true love for the game of cribbage. | At a young age, I had an epiphany: “I can actually do anything.” I realized while listening to the radio that those intricate, beautiful sounds were made by other humans, like me. This realization expanded into every domain of life. So, naturally, I took on more hobbies than my family could handle (lucky for me, they tried). I picked up piano, sailing, computer programming, electronics, writing, cooking, and eventually, woodworking, all before high school. Later in life, once the opportunity arose, I became a member of a community shop, and finally I could fully let loose on my desire to build basically everything I could think of. We are two journeyman carpenters at Lost River Timber that left the daily grind of commercial construction to follow our lumberjack dreams. Instead of becoming beard growing, plaid wearing, tree fellers, we both were drawn to what happens to trees after they come down. We could not ignore the amount of wood waste we were seeing in the industry and decided we could do something about it. We started with a chainsaw mill, borrowed trailer and rented garages. Now, two sawmills later, multiple kiln trials, heaps of equipment upgrades and an outfitted shop, we are a fully operational urban reclamation company. The satisfaction we get out of taking a piece of wood from felling the tree all the way to the finished product cannot be beat. | We found our niche is combining our two great passions, woodworking, and the outdoors. Growing up near the mountains is something that was so normal to us that we almost took it for granted. They are unbelievable things, a realization that became increasingly evident as we began creating mountainscape wood pieces. | Nomadic Designs began in the summer of 2016, in Ontario, Canada. Mike Liambas, our head honcho and professional hockey player of 11 years, was back in Toronto for the summer and staying with his parents. While visiting one morning, his mother showed him a photo of a mirror she was hoping to buy. He took one look at it and said he would love to make it for her instead. That project was when his interest in woodworking took off. Over the next few off-seasons, Mike explored other woodworking projects which include crib boards made in Canada, diving into making live edge furniture for friends and family. The Driftwood here is beautiful and unique and one never knows what pieces they will find. Making cribbage boards began when I was working at a very dull job. I woke up one morning, and decided not to go back. I quit that day. Instead, I decided to use the rest of my savings to focus on what makes me happy.
